Using Tech for Book Marketing

Kate Gingold from Sprocket WebsitesKate has been building websites with her husband Don since 1996 for all sorts of clients, including authors.

Kate regularly writes about online marketing for Sprocket Websites and provides tips and techniques for entrepreneurs and small-business owners. Since being an author today is not really different from being an entrepreneur with a small business, most of those tips are just as useful to authors.

Kate is an author herself. She writes books on local history, including the award-winning "Ruth by Lake and Prairie," a fictionalized account of the true story of Great Lake pioneering to the shores of Chicago and beyond to found Naperville, Illinois.

Yes, It Is Who You Know

Marketing for authors is all about getting in front of the folks who might want to buy your books. Sometimes that's getting in front of them digitally, but it can also mean getting in front of them quite literally. Like standing right where they are facing. Such as at an author event. One way to go about having an author event is to know the right people.

Like many other writers, I spend a decent amount of time at the local library. So when I saw there was a "Local Author Event," I asked one of the librarians I know how I could be involved. It was too late to be included in that one, but I got on a list for the next one. At that event I sold a few books and I got to chat a lot with the author who shared my table. It was fun and we stayed in touch.

A few weeks later, she started organizing a Local Author Event at a nearby bookstore and invited me to be one of the local authors. She did all the work of setting it up with the store owner and organizing the authors. One of the authors designed a flyer to be handed out at the bookstore and used in digital marketing. I helped by using a news release spread sheet I had to post the event on calendars and at local news outlets. We are all going to be bringing refreshments on the evening.

It all came together because of one person's enthusisiam which motivated the rest of us to help. Anyone in the Chicago south suburbs is welcome to join us on Wednesday, January 29 from 7:00p until 9:00p at Frugal Muse Books, Music and Video. Five authors will be reading from their books and musician Joe Eddy Brown will be playing in between. And did I mention that there will be refreshments? Genres include mystery, health and wellness, history, science fiction and parenting from Karen Sjoblom, Angela Holtz, Barbara Lipkin, Dennis Bartizal and me.
